POM Wonderful was founded in 2002 by billionaires Stewart Resnick and Lynda Rae Resnick. It operates under The Wonderful Company, a vast privately held agribusiness that also owns FIJI Water, Wonderful Pistachios, Wonderful Almonds, and Halos Mandarins. The Resnicks control hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland in the “Oligarch Valley,” and they’re the second-largest user of paraquat in the state—a toxic herbicide banned in over 60 countries. Paraquat exposure is linked to an elevated risk of Parkinson’s, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and childhood leukemia. In 2021 alone, Wonderful sprayed more than 56,000 pounds of it across their 160 sq miles of farmland in California. Thanks for that Stew and Lynda, good looking out.Through their company, the Resnicks also hold a majority stake in the Kern Water Bank Authority, one of the state’s largest underground privatized water-storage facilities, giving them significant access to water resources in the drought-prone Central Valley, already a scarce system. A 2010 FTC complaint (upheld in 2012) charged that POM made deceptive health claims about their pomegranate juice. One of their slogans was “Cheat Death.”

The couple have donated to lobby groups which continue to fight for increasingly aggressive sanctions on Iran. Iranian pistachios, widely regarded as some of the best in the world, largely disappeared from the U.S. market after sanctions were imposed in 1979. Those restrictions created an opening for the Resnicks to consolidate and expand their dominance in the domestic pistachio industry. We are so curious to try Iranian pistachios.
Because their scale and practices raise questions about ethical water governance, resource allocation, and corporate influence on national policy, we passed on using their juice. Instead, we stuck with what we know, and sourced ripe fruit from a friend with a small pomegranate grove nearby. A friend who harvested the pomegranates himself and drove them to our kitchen. A friend who likely prioritizes ethical practices over a desire for economic dominance at any cost to the world around them.
